Visiting the Library Building

We are excited to have you visit the Hiram College Library!

Please use the tabs above to help you navigate entering and exiting the library building. 

The Hiram College Library is following current best practices for library use including additional cleaning, providing socially distant study spaces, and quarantining returned materials. If you have any questions about library procedures, please contact the Library Director, Janet Vogel

The Media Center is currently open by appointment only.
Tech and Trek is temporarily in the Dray Computer Center.

To Enter the Library Building:

  • Use the front entrance. 
  • On the first floor:
    • The Ask Here desk has student staff ready to answer your questions!
  • Go downstairs to access:
    • Library Basement Classroom
    • DVDs and CDs in the Chamberlain Room (currently accessible only by request
    • Media Services (open by appointment)
  • Go upstairs to access:
    • Library Study Rooms: 2nd and 3rd floors
    • Library Classrooms: 2nd floor Pritchard Room, 3rd floor BI/Instruction Room
    • Books: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors
    • Government Documents: 3rd floor 
    • AirPrint Printer: 2nd floor
    • Archives: 2nd floor (open by appointment)

To Leave the Library Building:

  • From the First Floor:
    • Use the east exit, not the front door. As you return to the front door, turn right down the hall before the Ask Here desk.
  • From the Lower Level:
    • Follow the signs to exit using the spiral staircase at the back of the classroom area. Follow the signs at the top of the stairs to use the east exit.
    • Use the elevator to the 1st floor. Turn right, then turn right again when you reach the end of the hallway. Exit using the east door.
  • From the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Floors:
    • Use any stairwell to move to the 2nd floor.
    • Follow the signs to the library annex and exit.
    • Go through the fire door directing you to the exit and Pritchard Room.
    • Go to the end of the hallway and use the door to your left. 
    • Follow the signs to the first floor and exit through the library annex.

Accessible Main Entrance:

  • The front door is an accessible entrance. 

Accessible entrance to the Annex (access to Pritchard Room during class hours):

  • From the front of the library, move to your left. 
  • Enter the annex door marked "accessible entrance."*
  • Move down the hall and use the elevator on your right to access the second floor. 
  • Exit out of the elevator to the left and move across the "bridge" to access the main library building. 
  • Take the first opportunity to turn left again to access the main elevator.

*Note: Between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., the annex door will be unlocked. If you need assistance opening the door or after hours, please call 330-569-5489 and a library staff member will assist you.

Accessible exit via the Main Entrance:

  • Use the main elevator to move to the first floor. 
  • Exit using the main entrance. 

Accessible exit via the Annex:

  • Use any elevator to move to the second floor. 
  • Follow the signs to the library annex and exit.
  • Go through the fire door directing you to the exit and Pritchard Room.
  • Use the elevator to go to the first floor. 
  • Turn left out of the elevator and exit the door in front of you.

If you are not a Hiram College student, staff, or faculty member and you need access to the library building, we ask that you contact us to make an appointment so that we can safely admit you to the building at a time when students are not entering/exiting for classes.

You may also schedule curbside pickup of any library materials. Email us (library@hiram.edu) and provide the title and call number of your item(s) as well as when you would like to pick them up. Please allow 1 business day for processing and wait to be notified via email that your item is available before coming to campus. 

Using the Library

The Library Services desk is currently located on the Lower Level of the library building. Please wear your mask and follow posted guidelines for social distancing when waiting to check out. 

If you would like to utilize curbside pickup of your items, please email us (library@hiram.edu) and provide the title and call number of your item(s), your library barcode (on the back of your ID), and let us know when you would like to pick them up. Please allow 1 business day for processing and wait to be notified via email that your item is available before coming the Library. Once you arrive, please call 330-569-5489 and let us know you have arrived at the library's front door. We will bring materials out to the front of the library. 

eBooks for Contactless Checkout:

The Hiram College Library offers many eBooks for contactless checkout in addition to electronic journals and databases. Use OneSource to search most of our print and digital resources at once. OhioLINK also offers many eBook lending options as well as an Electronic Journal Center. Most eBooks are available for multiple users at the same time, so you do not have to wait to use them. If you have any questions about eBooks, please ask a librarian.

Items may be returned to the drop box inside the front doors of the Library, to the drop box outside the Media Center on the Lower Level, or at the Library Services desk on the Lower Level (inside the Media Center). 

The Hiram College Library is following current library best practices and quarantining all materials for 3 days. Items will not be checked in until 3 days after you return them. However, all items will be backdated at check in to the date you returned it and you will not be fined for the extra time the items spent in quarantine. If you have any questions about items on your account, please contact us at library@hiram.edu or 330-569-5489.

You can renew any library materials online. No need to come in!

  • On the My Account screen, enter your Name and your Library Barcode (found on the back of your Hiram College ID). 
  • Click Submit.
  • Select the items you wish to renew by clicking in the checkboxes.
  • Click renew selected items. (You may also choose to renew all.)

Study rooms are limited to 1 user at a time due to social distancing.

Study rooms will be cleaned after each use.

Please only use a room with a sign hanging on the door. The sign indicates that the room has been cleaned. 

A mask must be worn in the room and in the library at all times. 

Please return the room sign to the Library Services desk on the lower level before leaving the library so that our staff can clean the room. 

Thank you for helping us keep library spaces clean!

  • Library spaces will be cleaned daily and high-touch areas will be cleaned multiple times per day. 
  • Always wash or sanitize your hands before or after using library materials for your safety.
  • Please return any unwanted materials to the bins next to the elevator for quarantine. 
  • Each floor has a cleaning station next to the elevator. If you wish to disinfect a table or chair before and after use, please use the spray bottle and rags provided. 
  • Please return all cleaning materials after use. 
  • Please leave all furniture in place to accommodate social distancing. All chairs and tables have been placed for 6 foot spacing. 
  • All areas of the first floor are closed until construction is complete. Thank you for your cooperation.

Are you a first year or transfer student? Before you check out books, we need to update your library account with the barcode on the back of your student ID. 

Please visit the Library Services desk on the lower level any time with your student ID and ask to have your barcode added to your account. You can then check out physical items and OhioLINK eBooks. 

If you are unable to access the library building, please email library@hiram.edu with your name, phone number, Hiram Student ID number (on the front of your ID), and the number on the barcode on the back of your ID. We will update your account within 1 business day. 

Getting Help

Librarians are always glad to assist you.

For Research Help:

Email reference@hiram.edu to set up an appointment to meet with a librarian. Include your course name, what information you are hoping to learn, and when your assignment is due. The email address is typically checked M-F 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. You may also call the library at 330-569-5489 and ask for a librarian. You may also ask whether a librarian is available when you visit the Library Services desk in the Library's lower level, and we will meet with you if we can!
